Everything DiSC Catalyst Groups

What are Catalyst Groups?

Everything DiSC Catalyst™ (Catalyst) provides a unique tool for learners to understand their team’s DiSC culture called Catalyst Groups.

Catalyst Groups was designed to help individuals understand the culture of the groups they work within. As remote teamwork continues to grow, we expect this feature will continue to aid team building particularly for team leaders.

**UPDATE** In April 2023, Catalyst Groups added a new feature called Group Continua which provides further insights into team behavioral tendencies.

In this article, we review:

If you are ready to start using Groups on Catalyst, you can log in to your account and download a discussion guide. Additionally, Everything DiSC Catalyst kit holders can download a full set of activities surrounding Catalyst Groups for free.

Catalyst Groups: What's Included

Create Group Maps for your Team(s)!

The Group Map is the most visual part of the Catalyst Groups experience. Learners can easily switch between the different groups they may work on and see how the culture changes.

As a small team, this feature was insightful to see how adding two new team members would change how we work together.

Catalyst Groups - Big Picture Overview of Styles

See the Big Picture of Team

The Groups you create on Catalyst is dynamic and will calculate what percentage of each style is represented.

This feature allows for you to easily see, through numbers, if one style is dominant or not represented in your group. This section provides questions to help learners better understand their group.

Review Team Member details about each Style on your team

The Style Insights section is designed to help a learner sort through their groups based on Style. If learners know that they need to work extra hard to connect with individuals with a particular style, they can find each group member through this section.

**New Feature** Group Continua

Group Continua allows teams and groups to understand their behavioral tendencies. The Group Continua outline the following behavioral tendencies:

  1. Accommodating – Strong-Willed
  2. Private – Outgoing
  3. Focused on feelings – Focused on Logic
  4. Tactful – Frank
  5. Structured – Unstructured
  6. Focused on realities – Focused on possibilities
  7. Skeptical – Accepting
  8. Fast Paced – Steady Paced

This feature is helpful to understand group decision-making, culture, and potential disruptions. As an example, our team used the group continua feature and saw that our team overwhelmingly focuses on possibilities rather than realities.

Catalyst Groups - Group Continua

This insight is helpful as we discuss taking on new products or projects. Rather than rely on the group being energized on starting something new, we should pause and ask if the new product or initiative is realistic.

Catalyst Groups: Case Study

In 2022, our small team grew from 6 members to 8!  Overnight our team grew 33%.

This amount of change rapidly altered our team dynamics, and we needed to internalize those changes as we began the onboarding process.

Fortunately, we had help from Catalyst to help us visualize those changes.

On their first day, we had our new team members complete an Everything DiSC Workplace on Catalyst assessment, and we took their results and created our new team map:

6-Person Team
8-Person Team

You can see from our 6-Person Team that we were heavy on the Stability, Accuracy, and Support side of the DiSC map. When we added our two new members to our 8-Person Team we increased our presence on the Results, Action, and Enthusiasm side.

Catalyst Groups was able to show this comparison when using “The Big Picture” section:

We went from 66% of our team being C-Personality Type and no one with the i-Style as their primary Style to having a more balanced team where every style was represented.

From a cultural standpoint, this change was felt pretty immediately.

Our two new team members brought more energy, and DiSC was able to measure that accurately. They weren’t as cautious as most of our team in speaking their minds.

We quickly found that they even said “Good Morning” in our team Slack Channel when, previously, we would just start talking about topics we were working on without any formal greeting.

They even used memes on occasion too!

Catalyst Groups proved to be an effective way for our team to visualize the change in our group dynamics.
