Build. Better. Teams.

“Not finance. Not strategy. Not technology. Teamwork still remains the ultimate competitive advantage, both because it is so powerful and so rare.”

-Patrick Lencioni, The Five Dysfunctions of a Team

Five Dysfunctions of a Team

Five Behaviors™ for Stronger Teams

Based on The Five Dysfunctions of a Team

The Five Behaviors of a Team training combines Patrick Lencioni’s model with unique insights from a behavioral assessment. Individual team members receive a personalized report that will help them understand both their team dynamics. Within these insights, they will also learn how they personally might affect and be affected by their team based on the results of their assessment results.

This powerful training program teaches teams how to embrace five specific behaviors for better teamwork:

  1. Vulnerability-based Trust
  2. Constructive Conflict
  3. Commitment
  4. Accountability
  5. Team-oriented Results

While each area in this model is important, the model doesn’t work unless the team is able to build strength in each area. For this reason, the model is represented as a pyramid. Teams can’t move on to the next area of focus until they master the previous level.

Five Dysfunctions of a Team

Like Kathryn Petterson’s team in the book, The Five Dysfunctions of a Team, your team or (teams within your organization) will journey through this same process that Kathryn took her team through. The program begins with trust. Learners will discuss their team’s results and their teams aggregate ratings on the section. Furthermore, they will have individual insights about themselves and what might cause them to lose trust.

The team will go through each section in stages. Before the team can discuss how to engage in constructive conflict, they must work through what is holding them back from trusting each other.

Five Behaviors Training: How it Works

Five Behaviors Training Step 1

Take the Five Behaviors Team assessment

During this assessment, individual team members will both rate their team on Trust, Accountability, Commitment, Conflict, and Trust and take a personal behavioral assessment. Don't worry - no one will see any individual responses. It's important that participants are honest about how they see themselves and their team.

Five Behaviors Training Step 2

Run a Five Behaviors training

This program is most effective when it is facilitated by someone who is not on the team. A facilitator can help teams navigate the training while acting as a third party. All of the materials needed to run a program are sold separately or you can contact our organization, Center for Internal Change, to run the program for you.

Follow-up with free progress/supplemental reports

The Five Behaviors assessment offers teams free comparison reports to allow individuals to work out their behavioral differences. Furthermore, teams can retake the team assessment as many times as they want... for free! This training offers teams a way to benchmark their progress and aim to become the most effective team possible.

Actionable insights

Using an assessment allows teams to have data to understand their team’s current state. While each team must go through each of the Five Behaviors, they will have a road map to start their journey to know where they need to spend the most time. Download a sample report to learn more.

Get some help from Pat Lencioni

In this training, teams can hear directly from Pat Lencioni prior to each model. As the creator of the Five Behaviors team model, teams will benefit from hearing from Pat’s experiences working with really dysfunctional teams. See a sample video where you can hear Pat explain what vulnerability-based trust looks like.

Five Behaviors Assessment Cost

Administer your own assessments

The Five Behaviors assessments are sold based on quantity. For that reason, it’s better for organizations to purchase their training materials based on yearly usage rather than by individual training events.

There are two options to consider when purchasing these assessments:

  1. Organizations can open an administrative account on a platform called EPIC which is also used to issue Everything DiSC and other training assessments published by Wiley.
  2. Purchase the assessment through our online store. We will contact you directly for all contact information for the attending team members once payment is received (please allow 1 business day to set up).
Quantity Price Per Profile
1 - 7
$189.00/each
8 - 14
$178.50/each
15 - 21
$169.75/each
22 - 28
$164.50/each
29+
$159.25/each

What is EPIC? EPIC is an administrative site that will help organizations manage their employee’s personal reports. To open an account, there is a one-time administrative fee of $95. New administrators will receive access to live monthly EPIC 101 trainings and recorded training sessions. We suggest opening an EPIC account if organizations plan to use the Five Behaviors and other training programs that are published by Wiley. Click to open your account.

No!

We do offer an accreditation program for facilitators and trainers that want to be trained on how to run the program. That said, the program is designed so any confident facilitator, coach, or trainer can prepare using the materials and run a successful program.

This program includes 7 unique modules. the modules cover all five behaviors of Pat’s team module along with an introduction module and conclusion module.

No!

Pat Lencioni, founder of the Table Group and author of the Five Dysfunctions of a Team, offers a training program that doesn’t include a built-in behavioral assessment. The Five Behaviors training program is effective because individuals have personalized insights when talking about each subject of the program.

This answer really depends. If these projects are re-occurring frequently, groups like these might benefit from this training.

We would not suggest using this training with new teams or groups that meet infrequently.

This program is designed to run over 1-3 days for in-class sessions and spread out over 6-weeks for online programs.
